NEW DELHI: The National Crime Records Bureau’s 2023 report records 21,803 fatalities from 24,678 railway accidents across India, marking a 6.7% increase from 23,139 deaths in 2022, with 72.8% attributed to falls from trains or track collisions.
Maharashtra reported the highest at 3,445 deaths, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 3,212, amid issues like overcrowding and trespassing. Opposition leaders demand Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s resignation over systemic neglect, while the ministry cites safety measures A, the number of registered crimes in India (IPC and Special and local laws) increased by 4,16,623 as compared to 2022.
