PM Modi speaks to Cong president Kharge, wishes him speedy recovery

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge a day after he underwent a procedure for pacemaker implant in a Bengaluru hospital.

Kharge 84, got a pacemaker on October 1 at M. S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital in Bengaluru. Doctors said his condition is stable. He is likely to be discharged either on October 2 evening or October 3 morning. He was admitted on Tuesday and underwent the procedure the next day.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Spoke to Kharge Ji. Enquired about his health and wished him a speedy recovery.”

“Praying for his continued well-being and long life,” the Prime Minister said.

Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha was brought to the Bengaluru hospital on Tuesday for a general health check-up following discomfort in breathing. Doctors, who examined him, found he had a low heart rate and advised implanting a pacemaker.

His son Priyank Kharge, who is Karnataka’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT-BT Minister, said the pacemaker implantation procedure was successfully completed on October 2. “It was a short and minor procedure. He has been stable after the procedure,” he said.

Priyank Kharge said his father is expected to resume his work from October 3, and will attend all his scheduled engagements.

He told presspersons on Wednesday that doctors had advised the pacemaker to be implanted because of age related issues and breathlessness.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also visited Kharge.
