Radhakrishnan engages Rajya Sabha leaders to bolster Parliamentary functioning

NEW DELHI: Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan held his first formal interaction with floor leaders of various political parties in the Upper House and sought their support and cooperation in the smooth functioning of the Rajya Sabha and in strengthening parliamentary democracy.

The meeting aimed to promote smooth, structured, and disruption-free discussions while maximizing the quality and productivity of debates.

Emphasizing the core values of parliamentary conduct, Radhakrishnan said that “dialogue, deliberation, debate, and discussion are the basic tenets of parliamentary democracy.” He urged members to make full use of available instruments such as Zero Hour, Special Mentions, and Question Hour to raise issues of public importance.

The Chairman underlined that the Constitution of India and the Rules Book of the Rajya Sabha define the “Laxman Rekha” for parliamentary discourse. Stressing the need to make every moment in the House count, he said, “Every day, every hour, every minute, every second in the House should be used to strengthen democracy.”

Radhakrishnan expressed gratitude to all the leaders for their insights and participation, describing the interaction as a “grand success.”

Those present included Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

The meeting marked a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency of the Rajya Sabha and promoting constructive debate, reaffirming the collective resolve to uphold the spirit of parliamentary democracy.
