CHENNAI: Popular Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away in Chennai at the age of 46, following a health scare and admission to a private hospital. He suffered a massive gastrointestinal bleed and multiorgan dysfunction.
Shankar, known for his performances in films and television, had a health scare early this week when he had reportedly fainted. He was later admitted to a private hospital on OMR.
Dr. S. Asokan, CEO of GEM Hospital, said, “He was admitted in a critical condition with a massive gastrointestinal bleed and multiorgan dysfunction secondary to a complex abdominal condition. He was managed in the critical care unit with intensive medical management. Despite the best efforts of our multidisciplinary team, his condition deteriorated rapidly”, reports The Hindu.
Early reports state that the actor’s final rites and funeral ceremony will be held at his Chennai residence on Friday. The ceremony will reportedly see his family, film industry colleagues, former costars and even fans in attendance to pay their respects and bid him a final goodbye.
Soon after news of his demise broke online, fans took to their handles to offer their condolences to his grieving family and to also remember his epic performances over the years.
Robo Shankar became a household name thanks to his stints on hit television shows and his seamless transition to the big screen. Known for his comic timing and his memorable roles, he went on to carve a niche for himself. He shared screen space with top Tamil stars like Ajith in ‘Viswasam’, Vijay in ‘Puli’, Suriya in ‘Si3’, and Vikram in ‘Cobra’ and many others. Earlier in an interview with Galata, the actor has opened up about his battle with alcoholism which he said took a severe toll on his health.
