CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday began its short-duration winter session and adopted a condolence resolution mourning the loss of 41 lives in the stampede at Karur during TVK chief Vijay’s rally on September 27.
The House was adjourned after paying homage to sitting AIADMK MLA T K Amul Kandasami, who passed away on June 21.
The House, led by Speaker M. Appavu, also adopted condolence resolutions mourning the demise of former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan, veteran CPI leader Sudhakar Reddy, and IAS officer Beela Venkatesan.
The members of the House observed silence in honour of the departed souls.
Moving a condolence resolution to honour those who died in the Karur stampede, the Speaker Appavu said Chief Minister M K Stalin had rushed to Karur on the same day and met the family members of those who lost their lives, as well as those who sustained injuries. He visited them in hospital, consoled them, and granted solatium to the affected families.
On Wednesday, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu will move the supplementary estimates for the current financial year. The ongoing session of the Assembly is scheduled to conclude on October 17.
