Tamil Nadu govt helpline to aid Tamils stranded in violence-hit Nepal

CHENNAI: As violent protests rocks India’s neighbouring country Nepal – as Gen Z hit the streets against ban on social media, Indian government is keeping close watch on the situation in Nepal. Also, an alert has been sounded at 1750 Km long border.

At least 51 people have lost their lives so far. During the protest, there has been incidents of jailbreaks.

The Tamil Nadu government has set up a helpline to aid people from the State, including students, stranded in violence-hit Nepal. The helpline set up in Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi could be reached at: 011-24193300 (telephone), 9289516712 (Whatsapp)or prcofficetnh@gmail.com (e-mail).

The pressl release said a total of 116 people from Tamil Nadu, who were on a tour to Nepal, returned to India on Thursday.

Officials in the Tamil Nadu House were coordinating with officials in the Union Ministry of External Affairs and in the Embassy of India in Nepal, the press release added.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has instructed for setting up the helpline to assist in obtaining information regarding the status of Tamils and to aid in their safe return, the press release added.

Meanwhile, Nepal Police confirmed that more than 13,500 inmates escaped from prisons nationwide during the protests, alongside over 500 detainees held in custody for criminal investigations.

Despite the disruptions, officials said the overall law-and-order situation stabilised on Wednesday, though Kathmandu Valley saw sporadic incidents.

The Nepal Tourism Board announced that Tribhuvan International Airport resumed operations from 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and advised foreign visitors to contact their airlines for flight updates.
