RAMANATHAPURAM : On Tuesday the Chennai Egmore-Rameswaram Express was delayed near Uchipuli Naval Air Station for over two hours due to the train’s pantograph getting caught in the overhead equipment.
The freak incident caused suspension of rail traffic on the Rameswaram-Ramanathapuram section.
The pantograph is supposed to be lowered in that area because the railway administration shifted the cable underground at the request of the naval air station, a Railway notification said.
Loco pilots were instructed to lower the pantograph in this section and raise it again. The cause, whether pilot error or technical malfunction, is under investigation, according to Railway bulletin. As a result, some passenger trains between Madurai and Rameswaram were partially cancelled.
Work is underway to repair the OHE.
